How can a Mechanical Engineer prevent pollution?

As I have stated in my previous blog before pollution is a large problem today. I know some may say why would a mechanical engineer be concerned about the environment whenever there are specific careers for the environment, but anyone who creates things that are used need to keep in mind if it will hurt the environment. Many people are starting to see that pollution is increasing and the condition of the world is getting worse. According to the article, "Two Projects Receive Funding for Technologies That Avoid Carbon Emissions" people are willing to help to prevent pollution. In this article written by Emily Dahl it states that MIT Energy Initiative Low Carbon Centers has funded over one million dollars to projects aiming to avoid carbon emissions. Why would they invest all of that money into that? They want people to understand the importance of preventing pollution. If we keep carelessly putting things in the world without thinking of the consequences then in the future natural life and the next generations will have a difficult time living on the earth. One of the processes I found they are using to prevent carbon emissions is to take the CO2 in the gas state and mixing it with water then this solution will react with reservoir rocks to form a solid material. This process is called carbon dioxide mineralization. Imagine if we would start doing this more often, less of these carbons will be getting up into the atmosphere and hurting the environment. More projects like these need to become implemented by Mechanical Engineers so we will not allow the world to become inhabitable in the future.
